Diablo Lake + Washington Pass • 2 hrs from Seattle

One of Washington’s most underrated day trips — turquoise water, dramatic mountain passes and some of the best views in the North Cascades without needing a big hike.

This route is perfect if you want the North Cascades experience in one day but don’t want to spend half of it hiking. You’ll drive the incredibly scenic Highway 20, stop at Diablo Lake and continue into the mountains to Washington Pass.

Before you go

The Route

From Seattle, take Hwy 20. Views start after Marblemount.

First stop — Diablo Lake

Big turquoise lake right off the road. Picnic tables; best photo from the left side mid-morning.

Short paved path to 360° views. Highest point and windier.
